'It's a great trauma': Penélope Cruz reveals she saw her sister get hit by a car when they were children

Penélope Cruz has revealed she has a lot of “trauma” after watching her sister be hit by a car when they were kids.

The actress, 49, recalled the horrific story to Elle magazine, saying she remembers feeling “numb” about the incident while sitting in hospital as her sister was attended to.

“My sister was run over by a car in front of me when I was eight or nine. I remember she was wearing a red coat,” Cruz said.

“And for me, time stopped. It’s a great trauma, because I saw her losing consciousness.

“And I was numb in the hospital, telling people, ‘Oh, my sister just got run over by a car.'”

Her sister survived. Cruz made the admission when talking about her “fear of driving,” despite starring in the new Ferrari film.

Cruz didn’t mention names, but it is believed she is speaking about her sister Monica, rather than her half-sister Salma.

Monica Cruz, 46, is also an actress and is known for films including The Inquiry and Last Hour.

“The other day we were sitting together in the back of the car and I was looking in the rear view mirror and a very strange thing happened: I thought I was looking at my face and it was hers!” Penelope reportedly told Contactmusic.com.

The pair are believed to be very close.

Penelope, who is married to actor Javier Bardem, once shared a sweet flashback picture of the pair together as kids in honour of Monica’s birthday.

It’s based on the story of the late Enzo Ferrari, the race car driver turned entrepreneur.

In 2019, Cruz marvelled at the events of her life to Marie Claire, telling the publication, “My life is… a very different life, but it’s the life that I always wanted since I was a little girl.”
