Bruce Springsteen and wife Patti Scialfa share tender on-stage moment following cancer news

Bruce Springsteen and wife Patti Scialfa have performed an emotional duet days after she announced to the world she has been battling blood cancer for the past six years.

Scialfa, 71, and Springsteen, 74, performed the rocker’s 1987 hit Tougher Than the Rest at the Sea.Hear.Now Festival in their hometown of New Jersey in the US.

Springsteen introduced his wife and the crowd roared as he said, “She’s lookin’ good too!”

Scialfa, a member of the E Street Band, was dressed in black and was clearly touched by the reception.

It was ahead of the release of the documentary Rock Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band that the musician shared her diagnosis.

The documentary premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on September 8.

In the film, Scialfa spoke about her struggle to continue performing during treatment, saying it has “become a battle.”

“I’ve been performing with this band for 40 years,” she said.

It was in 2018, while she and Springsteen were performing in a play on Broadway called Springsteen on Broadway, that Scialfa was diagnosed with “early stage multiple myeloma.”

While performing is a struggle, Scialfa said it “hasn’t put a damper on her love of performing”

“This affects my immune system so I just have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go,” she said.

“Every once in a while, I come to a show or two and I can sing a few songs onstage, and that’s been a treat. That’s the new normal for me right now, and I’m OK with that.”

After performing the duet, the couple embraced before Scialfa waved to the crowd and exited the stage.

Scialfa and Springsteen have been married for 33 years. Scialfa has been a member of the E Street Band since 1984.

The couple are parents to sons Evan, 34, and Sam, 30, and daughter Jessica, 32.

This current tour was originally slated for 2023 but was postponed when Springsteen was diagnosed with peptic ulcer disease. The band released a statement at the time.

“Bruce Springsteen has continued to recover steadily from peptic ulcer disease over the past few weeks and will continue treatment through the rest of the year on doctor’s advice,” the statement read.

Rock Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will be released on Disney+ later this year.
